We now have Terrapin LOGO installed on all the workstations in the IT Centre. Working with the Gr5,6&7 Tech Club we covered how to build procedures. I gave them the task of using rotating squares to make the following images: All the students were able to complete the task, some needing more time than others!

These 6 legged robots from the UK were very popular over Christmas. We now have two of them to augment our robot collection, although these are not programmable. What is very interesting is how they move. There are six legs that move three at a time. I was asked the question, "What educational value do these toys have?" Of course there is the fun or play factor. Personally I believe there should be more fun in school! But it certainly raises for me the question of control technology. In using these robots effectively we control the technology rather than the technology controlling us. How many people have trouble programming their cell phones, remotes or DVD players effectively?
So this week my fout Tech Clubs started up again. Monday lunchtime was Grade 2 Robotics, and 47 students showed up to play Turtle Pond, Road and Motion Planning, as well as use the Pro-Bot floor robots.Tuesday lunchtime saw 12 Grade 4 students learn about Animoto. Wednesday lunchtime was when 16 Grade 3 students created pop art collages of themselves. Check out the samples below! Unfortunately one of the students moved the picture file so some weren't able to access their photos. I eventually tracked down the errant folder - to be continued next week! After school on Wednesday 10 Grade 5/6 students worked with 2Create a Superstory. I love Sophie's story Penny the Pig shown below! Click on the arrow to turn the page. This week the co-curricular clubs started up again. The Grade 3's are continuing with art projects. We explored bomomo and the students were quite fascinated with what transpired. Personally I'm not too sure what to make of it as there is no direct control of colour or size, but the results can be quite impressive. The Grade 4's used the Pro-Bot floor robots to explore basic LOGO programming, and I showed them this video as an introduction. They are keen to make an Animoto video to present to to the school at a future Assembly. Finally the Grade5/6's used JellyCam to explore stop-motion animation. As we only had three webcams they also used GoAnimate!
I know it was a short term, but the time seems to have flown by! The last couple of weeks the Gr5/6 students have finished off their animations in 2CASS, then they've enjoyed some downtime, mainly by playing Minecraft. The Gr4 studenrs have thoroughly enjoyed making Animoto videos - for progression they'd need to focus on content and design, as I feel they've really only been playing with the process. Maybe this then come back to the original purpose of the video itself. The Gr3 students have enjoyed the art projects, finishing with 'Around the World', placing their image on a world background. (See examples below!) And the Gr2 students (so many of them!!) thoroughly enjoyed both The Isle of Tune and Motion Planning, as well as LOGO programming. |
